Coldwater Canyon Park Renovation
ABOUT COLDWATER CANYON PARK & RESERVOIR Coldwater Canyon Reservoir Park opened in July, 1920 and is located on the east side of Coldwater Canyon at Beverly Drive. The original 2 ½ acre park had landscaped areas with grass, shrubs, trees, a gravel walkway and benches for seating and cost $5,000 to develop at the time. It was considered very unique as it was built over an 8,000,000 gallon reservoir. Coldwater Canyon Reservoir Park today provides a beautifully landscaped green space, a synthetic jogging track, seating areas with shade trellises, a fountain, and the Woods Davy "Stillwater" art sculpture.
Today, the park acreage has expanded to just over 5 ½ acres and includes the west side of Coldwater Canyon where you'll find a wide span of green space, a water stream, Gwynn Murrill’s "Cougar III" bronze sculpture and a children's playground for 2-5 year old and a 5-12 year old play areas. This side of the park is referred to as the Coldwater Canyon Park. The City offers year-round preschool weekdays for 3-5 year olds and introductory soccer classes at Coldwater Canyon Park.
The public was invited through ads, articles in local newspapers, mailers, e-blasts and on-site surveys to share their vision at Recreation & Parks Commission meetings for a new play space at Coldwater Canyon Park. Based on the feedback, March Studio architectural firm prepared the schematic design for park improvements. Through the Request for Proposal process, four playground equipment manufacturers created conceptual designs for the playground and presented at a subsequent Recreation and Parks Commission meeting. Based on public input, Recreation & Parks Commission and City Council approvals, final design documents were prepared. The design is shared above.
